Mojang Studios has announced that Minecraft will officially cease support for virtual reality (VR) headsets after March 2025. Despite the game’s immense popularity, it appears that VR hasn’t gained enough traction within the Minecraft community, leading the developers to end VR support for both the PC and PlayStation versions.
Launched in beta in 2009, Minecraft quickly became a global phenomenon. The game introduced VR support in 2016, initially for Oculus VR. Later, it expanded to include PlayStation VR as well. However, this recent decision marks a significant shift in Mojang's approach to VR technology.
As detailed in the changelog for Minecraft’s 1.21.40 Bedrock update, the game will no longer support devices such as Oculus Rift, Meta Quest, or Windows Mixed Reality headsets after March 2025. This gives players a brief period to adjust before the feature is permanently removed. Following this date, only those using mods like Vivecraft for the Java version will have the ability to continue playing with VR headsets.
This announcement follows a prior confirmation that Minecraft would discontinue support for PlayStation VR after March 2025. Mojang clarified that players who have used the PS4 and PS5 peripherals will still have access to their previously created worlds and any items purchased from the marketplace. Fans had hoped this transition would lead to official support for the PSVR2, but recent developments make this seem unlikely.
The current decline in the VR gaming market may be a contributing factor to this decision. For instance, Ubisoft’s Assassin's Creed Nexus VR underperformed financially, disappointing CEO Yves Guillemot. Similarly, Sony’s PSVR2 has not met sales expectations, with a resurgence in purchases only occurring after a substantial price drop of $200.
On a positive note, there are still several fantastic sandbox VR games available for enthusiasts who want to keep using their headsets. Titles such as The Forest, Garry’s Mod, and No Man’s Sky currently offer VR support and might be appealing alternatives for Minecraft fans looking for new experiences.
