Although Helldivers 2 has remained a PlayStation exclusive since its launch earlier this year, discussions about a possible Xbox version are still on the table, at least according to a member of the development team. The community manager at Arrowhead Game Studio recently hinted at the possibility of an Xbox release, emphasizing that the final decision rests with Sony and Microsoft rather than the developers themselves.
Since its debut in February 2024, Helldivers 2 has made a significant impact on the gaming community. The title has been praised for its engaging gameplay, stunning visuals, and cooperative gameplay objectives. Its reception was so positive that it quickly soared to the top of review platforms, earning the prestigious "Overwhelmingly Positive" rating on Steam for several months. However, the game faced challenges recently, with both Sony and Arrowhead experiencing backlash over various decisions. Thankfully, following its latest update, Helldivers 2 appears to be regaining momentum, prompting speculation about what lies ahead.
In a recent discussion on the game’s official Discord, Arrowhead's community manager, Twinbeard, addressed the topic of an Xbox version for Helldivers 2. The news, shared by VideoGamer.com, reignited conversations around one of the most frequently asked questions of 2024. "Who says it [Helldivers 2] couldn’t [come to Xbox]?" Twinbeard remarked, clarifying that the ultimate decision involves discussions between Sony and Microsoft's Phil Spencer. "It’s not up to us, but if both parties see a financial or brand advantage, it could happen. If Sony believes it’s not worthwhile, then it won’t."
As the gaming landscape evolves, players have come to expect crossplay functionality for most multiplayer games, regardless of whether they're on Xbox, PlayStation, or PC. In recent years, Sony has begun releasing some of its major exclusives, such as God of War and Marvel's Spider-Man, on PC in addition to its console lineup. Meanwhile, Microsoft has started launching titles that were once exclusive to PC and Xbox on PlayStation systems. While this latest update offers a glimmer of hope, gamers should temper their expectations and assume they won't be joining a Helldivers 2 match on their Xbox Series X any time soon.
Helldivers 2 continues to receive regular content updates and patches, with its Warbond progression system enticing players to return for more thrilling alien and robot battles. Over the past year, new missions, planets, and weapons have been introduced, including significant additions like mechs and fresh Stratagems. The game recently concluded its 60-day initiative aimed at addressing player feedback, resulting in improvements to armor, weapon balance, and enemy dynamics.
