A fresh addition to the Destiny universe has officially been announced—a mobile game called Destiny: Rising. This RPG shooter, developed by NetEase, is set in what seems to be an alternate timeline within the Destiny lore. While fans have been speculating about a possible mobile Destiny title for months, the newly released trailer finally gives a glimpse of what players can expect in terms of gameplay. However, many questions still linger about this mobile-exclusive experience.
Developed primarily by NetEase Games, the studio behind titles like Once Human and Diablo Immortal, Destiny: Rising is set to expand the Destiny universe without putting extra strain on Bungie’s resources. With Bungie recently revealing a detailed roadmap for Destiny 2's upcoming Codename: Frontiers content through 2025, it's clear the developer is committed to its flagship game while also balancing other projects.
Despite recent turmoil at Bungie, including layoffs and shifts in focus, the studio continues to work on Marathon alongside its Destiny 2 commitments. This means fans can rest assured that Bungie isn’t spreading itself too thin, as NetEase is taking the lead on Destiny: Rising’s development.
The reveal trailer for Destiny: Rising showcases gameplay that looks strikingly familiar to the main Destiny series. Set in what appears to be a distant era before the rise of the Guardians, the game hints at taking place during the Warlord era. However, the official description on the game's Twitter account notes that Destiny: Rising unfolds in "an alternate Destiny timeline," adding another layer of intrigue to its narrative.
Despite the excitement generated by the trailer, eager players won't be able to jump into the game right away. To get early access, players must register on the official website to join the closed alpha test, which kicks off on November 1.
While the alpha test is on the horizon, there’s still no official word on the game’s release date. Rumors suggest that Bungie’s involvement in Destiny: Rising may focus heavily on the game’s narrative and lore development. The pre-alpha gameplay featured in the trailer displays a blend of first-person and third-person action, with battles unfolding across familiar locations in the Sol System. Players can expect a hero-based experience, complete with unique characters and a host of new abilities that aren’t present in Destiny 2.
Much of what was rumored about Destiny: Rising seems to have been confirmed by the trailer, but the game’s similarities to the main Destiny series come with a catch. Fans should be prepared for mobile-style monetization practices, a common feature in games of this genre.
