Recent rumors suggest that Halo Infinite 2 was in development on the Slipspace Engine but was ultimately canceled. If this speculation is accurate, it could disappoint many fans who have been eagerly anticipating the continuation of Master Chief's journey ever since the release of Halo Infinite.
Halo Infinite marked a turning point for the iconic series, introducing several significant changes. The game featured a shift to a free-to-play multiplayer model, as well as a semi-open world campaign that many players enjoyed. While the game received mixed feedback after its launch, some fans appreciated the focus on Master Chief's storyline, especially after Halo 5 shifted attention to Spartan Jameson Locke.
Ever since Halo Infinite launched at the end of 2021, fans have been hoping for a follow-up campaign that would continue to build on its narrative. Now, new information has surfaced that might shed light on why a sequel hasn't come to fruition.
According to a recent report from Rebs Gaming, a well-known YouTube channel, Halo Infinite 2 was indeed in development at Halo Studios (formerly known as 343 Industries). The project reportedly started shortly after the release of Halo Infinite and continued into much of 2022.
Rebs Gaming's source, said to be a former developer at the studio, revealed that the sequel was being developed using the Slipspace Engine, the same technology behind the original Halo Infinite. The team working on this project was described as having "high hopes" for the future of the game. However, the project was allegedly canceled after a change in leadership and a decision to shift the focus to Unreal Engine 5.
Following this move to a new game engine, the development team reportedly spent several months familiarizing themselves with Unreal Engine 5. Unfortunately, the progress on this new direction did not go very far before a wave of layoffs affected the creative team at 343 Industries.
It remains unclear whether this transition to Unreal Engine 5 was intended to reboot Halo Infinite 2 or if it was part of a completely different project. The report suggests that tensions grew between the creative team and the new leadership at the studio, which may have contributed to the project's eventual demise.
As of now, there is no official confirmation from Halo Studios regarding the cancellation of this potential Halo Infinite sequel. Since the report from Rebs Gaming relies on an anonymous source, the accuracy of the claims remains in question. However, the studio's history of internal restructuring and the move to Unreal Engine 5 lend some credibility to the idea that a Slipspace Engine-based project could have been shelved.
These new claims emerge amid the studio's recent rebranding and confirmed transition to Unreal Engine 5, alongside announcements of several new Halo projects in development. It remains to be seen when Halo Studios will unveil more details about their next steps for the beloved franchise.
While fans eagerly await more news, the fate of Halo Infinite 2 remains uncertain, leaving many to wonder what the future holds for Master Chief's story.
