The long-awaited arrival of the original Red Dead Redemption on PC is just around the corner, set to launch later this month at a price of $49.99. Initially released in 2010 for the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360, the game debuted at $59.99—standard pricing for new titles during that era. While it eventually became playable on modern Xbox consoles via backward compatibility, it largely remained confined to its original platforms.
Last year marked a turning point when Red Dead Redemption made its way to the PS4 and Nintendo Switch. However, the PS4 and Switch versions came with a hefty price tag of $49.99, despite being over 13 years old at that time. Unsurprisingly, the Steam version is launching at the same high price.
More information has recently appeared on Red Dead Redemption's Steam page, confirming that the 14-year-old classic will retail for $49.99 at launch on October 29. For dedicated PC gamers who have waited more than a decade to experience this iconic game, the price may not be a deterrent. However, others may find it hard to justify spending such a significant amount for an older title, especially considering that the PS4 version is currently available at a discount.
For a limited time, Red Dead Redemption is being offered at a reduced price of $34.99 for PS4 players, down from its regular price of $49.99. Additionally, players have the option to subscribe to the GTA+ membership ($7.99 per month) to gain access to the game on PlayStation. While many PC gamers may be willing to pay $49.99 to play this beloved open-world Western, others might hold out for similar discounts before making their purchase.
It's unfortunate that PC players have had to endure such a lengthy wait to access Red Dead Redemption, particularly since its narrative continues from where Red Dead Redemption 2 leaves off, a game that has been available on PC for several years. Unless they sought out spoilers, PC gamers have been left in suspense about the continuation of the story.
The bad news for PC gamers is that they might face a similar delay with Rockstar's upcoming title, Grand Theft Auto 6. Currently, the game has only been confirmed for PS5 and Xbox Series X, with no PC launch date announced. While a PC port is likely to occur eventually, fans shouldn’t expect its release to coincide with the console versions.
