Overwatch 2 may rework Mauga's abilities to address balance issues, potentially modifying Cardiac Overdrive and incendiary bullets. These changes could enhance Mauga's effectiveness against squishy heroes.
Overwatch 2 has hinted at a possible rework of Mauga's abilities. As one of the latest additions to the roster, Mauga, like some other heroes, has revealed ongoing balance issues in Blizzard's hero shooter.
Mauga debuted in Overwatch 2 in December last year, and players quickly noticed the Samoan tank's power. He demonstrated high resistance for a tank hero, dealing significant damage to opponents while healing himself and his allies. Mauga's imbalance led some Overwatch 2 players to quit in protest. Since then, he has been frequently mentioned in patch notes, receiving five updates this year. Now, Overwatch 2 is considering major changes to his abilities.
Overwatch 2 has hinted that Mauga may receive a rework to his Cardiac Overdrive ability and incendiary bullets. Lead Gameplay Designer Alec Dawson mentioned to Twitch streamer Spilo that the team is "looking at what they want to do with Cardiac Overdrive." Dawson explained that while experiments have been conducted, the developers believe more testing is needed. They also questioned the effectiveness of Mauga's incendiary bullets against squishy targets and how to extend their effectiveness to other parts of his kit. The goal, according to Dawson, is to make Mauga more rewarding when facing squishy heroes.
During the five-second duration of Cardiac Overdrive, Mauga and his allies benefit from a 30% damage reduction, and 60% of the damage dealt to enemies is converted into healing for him and his team. With the Incendiary Chaingun, Mauga's left-click ability, he fires 18 bullets per second out of a total of 300, causing direct damage. If an enemy is hit 10 times by the Incendiary Chaingun, they will take additional damage for three seconds.
Although Alec Dawson didn't provide specific details about Mauga's potential rework, modifying Cardiac Overdrive could align with plans to make him a more effective diving tank. Diving tanks are known for their strong defensive capabilities and high mobility. While Mauga's Incendiary Chaingun can easily hit other tanks, it struggles against smaller targets. A rework could improve his effectiveness against these smaller heroes but might risk making him overly powerful against other tanks. With frequent updates, players are eagerly waiting to see if Mauga's rework will be implemented and how it will impact his role in the Overwatch 2 meta.
